(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - Walsh played in its first men’s lacrosse varsity contest and fell on the road at Roberts Wesleyan by a score of 18-8. The Cavs (0-1) previously fielded a club team the past three years, but have jumped to the varsity level with the move to NCAA Division II. The Redhawks already had five games under their belt and evened out to 3-3 with the win.

The Redhawks scored the first two goals of the game before Ben Stephens (Jr., 6-0, Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) scored the Walsh’s first goal an assist from Ian Maurer (Jr., 6-2, Jackson Township, OH/Jackson) at the 10:01 mark of the first quarter. From there Roberts Wesleyan scored the next four goals for a 6-1 lead to take control of the game.

The Cavaliers scored the next goal as Stephens assisted a Josh Jacobs (Jr., 5-11, North Canton, OH/HS) goal just before the end of the quarter, but Walsh could get no closer than four goals the rest of the way.

Mason Axline (Jr., 5-7, Green, OH/HS) was the offensive standout for the Cavaliers as he scored four goals. In addition to Stephens, who added an additional goal, and Jacobs and Maurer accounted for Walsh’s other goals.

Both Jeff Balzano (Jr., 6-0, Chesterland, OH/West Geauga) and Jason Lockwood (Sr., 6-4, Powell, OH/Olentangy) played a half in goal. Balzano started the game and made six saves. Lockwood played the second half and also made six saves.

The Cavaliers will return to action and play in their first ECAC game against nationally ranked No. 8 Seton Hill (3-1, 1-0) at 1 p.m.
